A common question we hear from parents is, “What can we install on our devices to protect our kids online?” While apps, phones, and smartwatches with parental controls can help and we support their use, the most powerful tool is open communication with your children.
Technology isn’t foolproof—filters and restrictions can be bypassed, and your child’s friends may have unrestricted internet access, exposing them to potential risks. Building a strong connection with your child is essential, and this involves more than just talking—it requires being an active listener. Today's world can be hard to parent in; we understand that. We strive to help parents and children have hard conversations about exploitation and trafficking before they find themselves in a crisis. According to a 2023 study by WeProtect Global Alliance, online grooming can start in as little as 19 seconds.
Here are some practical steps to help foster open communication with your child:
Ask Open-Ended Questions: Encourage your child to share by avoiding yes/no questions. For example, “What’s the most interesting thing you’ve seen online lately?”
Set Regular Check-In Times: Make time for uninterrupted, judgment-free conversations, whether it’s during dinner, a car ride, or bedtime.
Role-Play Scenarios: Practice how to respond to unsafe or uncomfortable situations online so your child feels prepared.
Stay Calm and Supportive: Respond with understanding when your child opens up. A calm reaction helps build trust and encourageOvercoming the "not my child" mindset and creating an environment where your child feels comfortable sharing anything with you is key. By fostering trust and maintaining calm reactions, you are empowering your children to make better decisions and more freely come to you with their concerns.
